Things You’ll Need

  • Drop cloth

  • Screwdriver

  • 220-grit sandpaper

  • Tack cloth

  • Paint tray and liner

  • Paint roller brush

  • Paintbrush

  • Solvent-based primer

  • Pink paint

  • White paint

  • Gold metallic paint

  • Painter's tape

  • Polyurethane

  • Gold door hole filler plate

Tip

I used Benjamin Moore multi-purpose oil-based primer and paint in the color "Springy Peach." For the gold-tipped legs, I used Martha Stewart multi-surface metallic acrylic craft paint in the color "Gold."

Step 1

Use a screwdriver to remove the existing hardware from your nightstand.

Step 2

Place a drop cloth under the nightstand to protect your floors and then lightly sand the nightstand with a fine grit sandpaper. Wipe away the dust with a tack cloth or soft cloth.

Step 3

Use a roller brush to paint a coat of primer onto the nightstand. Let it dry completely.

Tip

If you're painting MDF, use a solvent-based primer. MDF is quite porous, so a water-based primer would cause the wood fibers to swell.

Step 4

Paint a coat of pink paint on top of the primer and allow it to dry fully. Then paint a second coat on top to ensure full coverage.

Step 5

Paint the legs white. Once they're dry, tape off the bottom 3 inches of the legs with painter's tape and paint the tips gold. When dry, carefully peel off the tape.

Step 6

Allow the paint to dry completely and then seal the entire table with a coat of polyurethane to protect the paint from scratches or scuffs.

Step 7

Once the polyurethane has dried, add new hardware to the drawer. I used a gold door hole filler plate to add a bit of metallic glam and topped it with a hexagonal Lucite knob for a modern touch (both found at my local big-box hardware store).

Now you have a gorgeously glam nightstand that didn't cost a fortune but looks like it did.
