I couldn’t have been more than 12-years-old when I first started to battle oily, acne-prone skin, and while I managed to escape my teenage years without permanently damaging acne scars taking residence on my body, I still wrestle with occasional breakouts on my face, and struggled pretty terribly with back acne this past summer.
The good news is that my skin is in a pretty good place right now, and while my wallet and I have done our fair share of trial and error in the skin care department over the last several years, I’ve recently become hooked on homemade face masks. Call me crazy, but I much prefer to know exactly what ingredients are in my beauty products before I slather them on my skin, and thanks to the wonderful world of Pinterest, I’ve found face masks for all skin types and skin problems imaginable.
And they cost next to nothing to make!
Check out 16 of my favorite homemade face masks below, and raise your glass to a lifetime of glowing, gorgeous skin! And if you need a natural, store-bought face mask for busy times when you don’t have to DIY your own, I highly recommend the Art Naturals® Dead Sea Mud Mask!
FACE MASKS FOR OILY, ACNE-PRONE SKIN
Soothing Oatmeal Mask (Holistic Health Herbalist)
I’ve always found skin products containing oatmeal to be the most beneficial in soothing my eczema, but recently learned that oatmeal is also a fabulous ingredient for fighting breakouts as it absorbs excess oil. So if your t-zone is too shiny, give this mask a try!
Turmeric Face Mask (Health Beckon)
With anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, and anti-fungal qualities, turmeric is a great, natural remedy for problem skin that is prone to eczema and acne breakouts, and I love how effective this mask is at reducing redness and inflammation.
Bentonite Clay Mask (Divine Caroline)
Used in a lot of high-end spas, bentonite clay is a great way to detox your skin of acne-causing bacteria and impurities. Be sure to follow the instructions when using this mask, and enjoy 10+ minutes of R & R while it works its wonders on your skin.
Coconut Oil & Honey Mask (Mother’s Niche)
The anti-inflammatory properties of coconut oil combined with the probiotic and anti-bacterial properties of raw honey make this the perfect mask for oily, acne-prone skin, and I love Kristina’s suggestion to add a couple drops of fresh lemon juice to help shrink pores!
FACE MASKS FOR BLACKHEADS & ACNE SCARS
DIY Peel Off Mask (Home Remedy Hacks)
My sister used to buy a fancy peel-off mask when she was a teenager, and I always thought they were fun to use, but could never justify the price. As it turns out, these masks are SUPER easy to make, and so effective in removing blackheads.
All-Natural Blackhead Busting Blackout Mask (Body Unburdened)
My dad’s go-to remedy for stomach trouble when we were growing up was activated charcoal, and it has always worked wonders for me when I’ve eaten something that doesn’t agree with me, but I never considered the benefits of using it topically until giving this mask a try. And now I’m hooked!
Baking Soda and Lemon Mask (The Sexy Single Mommy)
We all know lemon juice has natural bleaching properties, and while I am fortunate enough not to have acne scars, I find this mask is great for evening out my skin tone, and the baking soda acts as a fabulous yet gentle exfoliator.
Honey and Lemon Face Mask (Beauty Banter)
The anti-bacterial properties of raw honey combined with the bleaching properties of lemon make this a great mask for treating acne while simultaneously reducing the appearance of acne scars, and I love how young and smooth this powerful combo makes my skin look!
FACE MASKS FOR DRY & SENSITIVE SKIN
Banana Face Mask (sheknows)
If you’ve ever been unfortunate enough to have a bad reaction to an expensive facial cream, mask, or scrub like I have, this mask may be the answer to all of your prayers. The moisturizing benefits of banana combined with vitamin-enriched olive oil and acne-fighting egg whites make this the perfect hydrating remedy for sensitive skin that’s prone to breakouts.
Avocado Face Mask (Freebie Finding Mommy)
The smooth, creamy texture of avocados combined with their antioxidant powers make this mask a real hit if you’re trying to moisturize your skin while simultaneously preventing fine lines and wrinkles. Add the additional ingredients (make sure you check out the full recipe!) and you’ve got yourself a serious remedy for dry skin!
Yogurt Honey Beauty Mask (Tips For Her)
If you’re looking to lighten/even out your skin tone, minimize your pores, and rehydrate your face, this mask packs a mean punch. Add in oats for a little soothing power, and your skin will never feel as nourished.
Coffee Face Mask (Sifa’s Corner)
From exfoliating to moisturizing to reducing under-eye circles, this mask is too good to be true, and is my go-to mask in the winter months when my face feels dry and irritated from the cold weather and artificial heat pumping through our condo. It’s ridiculously easy to make and wakes up my skin when I need it most.
FACE MASKS FOR WRINKLES
Homemade Wrinkle-fighting Eye Mask (Hello Glow)
If you suffer from crows feet around your eyes like I do, I highly recommend this mask. I’m not going to spoil the surprise by revealing the key ingredient, but I was absolutely WOWED that this household staple offers a natural source of retinol. I’m not a fan of buying beauty products that contain this wrinkle-fighting ingredient, but I’m all for reaping the benefits when it’s derived from its natural state.
Dr Oz’s DIY Natural Botox Face Mask (Look Good Naturally)
If Dr Oz recommends it, you have to try it, right?! This mask does triple the duty by moisturizing, exfoliating, and combating wrinkles in one pass, and with only 3 ingredients, it takes next to no time to prepare!
All Natural Exfoliating Face Mask (One Good Thing)
I initially started to use this mask as an exfoliator, and while it works wonders for removing dry, stubborn, flakey skin, the Vitamin E and cinnamon help repair and add a healthy glow to my face. I reserve this mask for days when I need a deep treatment, and I love how much younger and healthier it makes me look and feel.
Avocado Olive Oil Face Mask (Eat. Thrive. Glow.)
I’ve often heard that olive oil is a fabulous alternative to expensive makeup removers, but I was always too scared to try it as I worried it would clog my pores and make my skin breakout. As it turns out, high-quality olive oil can actually help combat acne, and it’s also an effective natural remedy for wrinkles too. Try this face mask to help moisturize and keep wrinkles at bay!
